The Subtle Art of ‘Presencing’
In our modern world, we’re taught to be busy. We rush from one place to the next, our minds racing with thoughts of the past or plans for the future. We may be physically present in a natural space, but our minds are often miles away, scrolling through a mental to-do list or replaying a conversation. This is where the subtle art of “presencing” comes in.
Presencing is the mindful shift from thinking about nature to being present with nature. It’s the simple yet profound act of choosing to get out of your head and into your body. It’s the difference between seeing a tree and truly seeing the intricate patterns of its bark, feeling the texture of a leaf, and hearing the rustle of the wind through its branches. It’s an active choice that helps regulate your nervous system, allowing you to move from a state of “fight-or-flight” to one of “rest-and-digest.” This shift isn’t just about feeling good; it has measurable benefits, including lower blood pressure, reduced cortisol levels, and a calmer heart rate.
A Practice of Sensory Awakening
The beauty of this practice is that it requires nothing but your intention. When you join a Nature Insights walk, we facilitate this shift with gentle invitations. We might ask you to pause and close your eyes, simply focusing on the sounds around you—the rustle of leaves, the chirping of a bird, or the distant hum of an insect. We may invite you to feel the cool earth beneath your fingertips or to notice the way a single beam of light filters through the canopy.
This practice, often referred to as a “sensory meditation”, grounds you in the present moment. By intentionally using your senses, you’re not just observing nature; you’re becoming a part of it. This simple act of awareness cuts through the mental chatter and helps you tune into the wisdom and stillness that are always there.
Integrating Presencing into Daily Life
The transformative power of presencing doesn’t have to end when the walk is over. You can integrate this practice into your daily life, no matter where you are.
- During a lunch break: Step outside for just five minutes. Find a tree and simply look at it, noticing the details of its leaves and branches. Go ahead, if you can, crunch the leaves and inhale deeply. Aromas can be so transporting-this can certainly be an assistance to giving yourself a break from the morning’s activities.
- In your backyard: Take off your shoes and feel the grass beneath your feet. Pay attention to the texture and temperature. I have heard it said “there are 10,000 nerve endings in the soles of your feet”-not sure if that is accurate to be quotable, but I find it a useful pondering while the shoes are off!
- On your commute: A small stone, (especially if significant to you) in your pocket can be a useful reminder throughout the day, or the commute, to breathe mindfully and deeply. If you are running an intention for the day, combining this with the recalled breath can assist also e.g. “ I am calm, breathing deeply, I am calm”. Explore, I have found this helpful, let me know if you do too. A word of warning-don’t do as I do and continually forget about the stone until you hear a clanging sound when your pants are in the washing machine!
By doing so, you are choosing to open yourself to the profound support that nature is always offering. When you are truly present, you allow nature to become your most profound therapist.
